Rusted FPE Sub-Panel Replaced With a Safe, Clean Square D Setup

Here's what we were working with - a heavily rusted FPE sub-panel mounted on the exterior of the home. The enclosure was corroded top to bottom, the breakers were old and questionable, and loose wiring was sitting at the bottom of the box. Not exactly a setup that inspires confidence.

FPE panels have a well-documented history of safety issues. The breakers in these panels are known to fail to trip when they should - which means in an overcurrent situation, they may not do their job. Add years of rust and outdoor exposure to that, and you've got a panel that really has no business still being in service.

We pulled the old FPE unit out completely and installed a Square D Homeline loadcenter in its place. It's a rainproof Type 3R enclosure rated for outdoor use, which is exactly what this application calls for. The new panel is properly sized, cleanly wired, and labeled for the two units it serves - no guesswork, no mystery circuits.

This is what an electrical panel replacement should look like. Everything is organized, connections are secure, and the enclosure is rated to handle the environment it's sitting in. The two AC units next to the panel are now fed by a setup that's actually built to support them reliably.

If you've got an older FPE panel - or any sub-panel that's been outside and showing its age - it's worth getting eyes on it. These things don't announce when they're about to fail. A proper electrical panel replacement now is a lot less painful than dealing with what happens if you ignore it.
